Reality-Check
Data Science Isn’t Dead, Vibe Coding Isn’t a Career: A Reality Check for 2026.
AI can generate code in seconds. That changes what it means to know how to code, but it doesn't make that knowledge obsolete. So, what is still worth learning?
Agentic coding can now create functional code without the need to be a developer or data scientist. Throughout this blog, I am going to break this single sentence into various aspects of what’s happening in the field.
First, a reality check on Vibe coding: is it a shortcut into the data science field, or a trap for people who never learn what they’re actually shipping? Then a hard look at why AI products are still so hard to build, even with better tools and agentic coding. From there, I will discuss the pillars of responsible AI and revisit what it means to deploy a model without understanding how it works. Finally, the uncomfortable question nobody wants to ask out loud: what happened to the ROC curve and the related performance measures, and why “it seems fine” has quietly replaced it. The question is not whether data scientists are still needed, but what parts of it are still worth learning when we work in an environment where agentic coding can produce working scripts in…
