Home dashboard update [Public preview feedback]

We made improvements to the content and layout of the home dashboard, designed to enable users to see, understand, and take action on their most important work in a single view. The default view of the home dashboard now displays short, customizable lists of recent agent tasks, pull requests, and issues. The feed view has moved to its own page at github.com/feed when the preview is enabled.

You can access the dashboard update by enabling New Dashboard Experience in Feature preview.

What's new

• A new agent module shows the status of all your agent tasks and provides links to the task session.
• Pull request and issue modules list your most recent pull requests and issues for quick navigation to your in-progress work. Each module has filtering options to customize the lists.
• The new Feed tab is the new home for the feed. It can also be found at github.com/feed. The feed's content and filters have not changed. When using the site on a mobile device, you can find a link to the feed in the hamburger navigation.
• We've applied fresh visual and UI updates to the dashboard.
• Action menus enable you to kick-off your work from any of the new modules. You can assign issues to Copilot coding agent or open pull requests and issues in Copilot Chat as references, with more shortcuts to come.

I like the new homepage, I missed when it was first removed! 😄

1. I think we should be able to sort the rows, I mean "Agent sessions", "Pull requests" and "Issues".
2. The repositories on the left is a duplicate of the repositories in the hamburger menu. I think the one in the hamburger menu should be removed.
3. Add extra / commands. I think it is missing a "spaces" slash which would use a specific space as a context.
   4. Add the ability to see the old feed somewhere. It is quite useful to track releases or new first issues of stared repositories for example. It is available in the top left corner. I am just blind! 🙈

As someone who has an account specifically for an organization, organization-specific HOME pages could absolutely be something I could get behind.

I would definitely support the idea of custom home pages for each organization. This feature would help tailor the experience, surface more relevant information, and make navigation much more efficient across teams and projects. It would be a valuable improvement for users who collaborate with multiple organizations.

Looks good, except for "agent sessions" forced down my throat, I just threw up in my mouth.

A few thoughts:

• I have a PR from 2016 which appears in the list (and the most recent activity dates from 2020), that's not exactly what I'd call recent. 😅
• The list items have excessively large paddings, I'd prefer a (much) more compact view.
• Sometimes the conversation continues in closed issues/PRs. It would be nice to continue showing them for some time after they're closed.
• I don't care about agent sessions, so I unchecked both the "open" and "closed" filters, but the list still shows and takes precious space on top of the page.
• An option to view the feed below the lists would be nice.

The PR from 2016 – that's weird. The pull request and issues lists are ordered by last updated. The item with the newest update will be at the top. So there may have been a recent update (maybe a comment, change in assignment, label?) If it's still not clear, let me know we can connect and figure out what's going on.

Also take a look at the filters, that might help you narrow down your results to your liking.

I mean, the previous "recent activity" feature (which showed in the left margin of the homepage, under "repositories") limited the view to issues/PRs which were active in the last 2 weeks. Then, they were removed.

Currently, I have 4 PRs open: 2 recent ones, and 2 very old ones. https://github.com/pulls shows the following:

Note the old PRs are both in the list. I left comments/reviews on the additional ones that are added in comparison to github.com/pulls. Only the top 2 are recent.

I know about the filters, but I definitely want the PRs I authored in the list. 🙂

Even setting notifications on those ancient repos to ignore does not remove them from the dashboard.

Got it. I'm assuming that means issues or PRs that aren't really relevant to you but might still be open. Would you want to hide them permanently or until there's new activity?

Also take a look at the filters, that might help you narrow down your results to your liking.

Creating an issue from the home page feels ass backwards

There are a few different ways to create an issue from the dashboard. Are you talking about using the /create-issue command in the Copilot input?

There are some longstanding issues that I watch, but don't want to be at the top of my feed.

Got it. That issue is at the top because it was updated last week it looks like, and the issues are ordered by latest update. Would you want to do something like snooze or hide that issue?

Also, I notice you aren't assigned to that issue. If you turn off the "Involves me" filter and just use the "Assigned to me" filter that might work better for you.

Why does this appear on hover? Hover is terrible UX for touch inputs. Make it a menu or something always there. I don't want to accidentally click this.

Thanks for the feedback. On mobile devices we do use a menu for that reason.

Thanks for the reply! The menu looks good. Why not make this default for desktop too? Desktops have more space so I don't see a reason to hide it behind a hover action.

Also the copilot icon appearing in middle of two PRs might not be ideal.

Echoing this request, I'm someone that doesn't do a lot with Issues and PRs so my "Home" shows one PR from 2017 and three issues that are not especially important to me. I have no Agent or AI/chat showing so the new Home is of really low value to me and mostly empty. Either integrate the Feed or make it an option to set as the default.

I find myself constantly visiting the /feed page manually after enabling this new dashboard, thinking this boils down to me always expecting the "dashboard" i visit to be the "here is new coolthings to explore and discover", rather than "I must see my work items!".

No idea where to post this, but I noticed I'm getting weird vowels being strangely replaced in branch names (e.g. master becomes mnstvr), this only happens with this new feature enabled when I browse github anonymously I don't have that issue

What happened to the feed? The new dashboad is just AI slop, and gets rid on the one things that makes github worth using the "community" element. This is a 💩 feature.

• The personalized greeting at the top is a wonderful, friendly touch.
• The new "Pull requests" and "Issues" modules in the center are very useful additions.
• It would be nice for a “Discussions” module to also be added to the center.
• Transforming the “Feeds” from being a module in the center to being a link in the side-menu disrupts natural scanning habits and creates an "out of sight, out of mind" problem since menus are often ignored. This should earn its place back in the center along with the other new modules.
• The hidden toggle-able search box in the “Top repositories” panel removes clutter nicely while remaining perfectly usable.
• All repositories being listed in the “Top repositories” panel is a nice feature for me, but I imagine it could be problematic for those with large lists, so keeping the "Show more" link that was available in the previous iteration may be a good idea.
• The “Latest from our changelog” section continues to occupy premium real estate that could otherwise be used for repository metrics or helpful white-space.
• For the time being, I'm going to stick with the original iteration.

What I am seeing as a solo developer using mostly AI to code. When I switch on the new dashboard it organizes certain elements of my work left incomplete or waiting on my hand to continue. However when disabled, I see a dashboard that shows me updates and works from other projects I follow, or have had associations with. For whatever reason there seem to be no in between. It's all about me or nothing about me at all. I am uncertain if this was the desired effect but it is what I see. Perhaps these two views can live together under a tab? So I can simply tab between prioritized information?
