Shaun the Sheep Movie & Other Precious Media
I think I watched my favorite piece of media of this month today. Yet again I happen to enjoy things to the fullest a fair amount of the time. The new Shaun the Sheep movie, however, gave me something fresh and fun that I’ve been missing out on for quite some time. I’ve never gotten much into the Aardman Animations universe, so I hadn’t been engaging with this beautiful, nostalgic world of whimsical characters and light hearted adventures before. This brings me to my first point about this movie: it’s precious. Not in the way of aw how cute, but it’s unique, thoughtfully made, and most importantly, human made. I think it’s important to recognize the scarce nature of such media today. A lot of what is manufactured doesn’t have the feel of humanity anymore. I struggle to see the beauty in things made by AI because they just feel hollow, recycled, dull. And beyond that, even things made by humans that are catered to the ideals of corporate figure heads looking to make as much money as possible yield that same feeling. This Shaun the Sheep movie was precious because it simply felt human. I further want to point out how quality this movie was. It had no speech, yet conveyed an entertaining storyline that kept me on the hook the entire time. I never knew for sure what was coming next! On top of that, it was funny. Like genuinely funny. It didn’t seem like it was catering to any one specific demographic of humor; I think anyone would laugh at the silly dynamics of the characters and the different bits throughout. In that way, the movie feels so approachable. It’s open to all to view its gorgeous animation, and go along on a goofy, unpredictable journey. I recommend seeing this movie. Keep precious media alive.
