Introduction

Leaderboards are one of the most common features in modern games. Whether it’s a battle royale, racing game, fantasy sports platform, or casual mobile game, players want to know where they stand compared to others.

At a small scale, building a leaderboard is straightforward. A player earns points, the score is stored, and rankings are displayed.

At the scale of tens or hundreds of millions of users, the challenge changes completely. The system must process millions of score updates, maintain rankings in near real-time, handle traffic spikes, and remain highly available.

In this article, we’ll design a leaderboard capable of supporting 100M+ users while maintaining low latency and high throughput.

Requirements

Functional Requirements

The system should support:

  • Updating player scores
  • Retrieving the global Top-K leaderboard
  • Fetching a player’s rank
  • Viewing friends-only leaderboards
  • Showing near real-time updates
