FALL BACK
An Ode to the End of Daylight-Saving Time
Can we please stop this useless time change?
I loathe the end of Daylight-Saving Time. It’s bad enough our trip through space gives us fewer hours of light, but then it’s compounded by man. It does little more than delay dark mornings as we move from winter to spring. But giving us a respite for sunlight for a brief time can’t make up for darkness at four-ish in the afternoon.
I was driving west when I realized we’d started to lose daylight as shadows grew. I’ve decided to buy a SAD light, hoping for a more positive outlook on the crushing blackout that affects my depression.
With apologies to Simon and Garfunkel, I offer this pathetic attempt at poetry.
Hello Darkness, my old friend
It’s only 4 p.m. again
The winter solstice is now creeping
Making me always oversleeping
And the blanket that I covered up with
It was not a myth
It conquers the morning silence
In languid dreams I walked alone
Praying for some melatonin
Under the brightness of my SAD lamp
