Untitled — 019
Since when
has going out for a meal
felt like such a burden?
There was a time
when we would go out for breakfast
on weekends without a second thought.
Now, even a simple breakfast for two,
with coffee, tax, and tip,
easily costs more than forty dollars.
And it’s not as if
we ordered anything special.
Not long ago,
I started making espresso at home.
Grinding the beans,
pulling a shot,
steaming milk for a latte.
At first,
it took a long time,
and the taste was never quite consistent.
Little by little,
I adjusted the process.

Before I knew it,
I was making lattes
just the way I liked them.
While looking for a place to have brunch,
I noticed a latte on the menu.
Strangely,
it didn’t catch my eye.
I could make one at home now.
There was no reason
to have one somewhere else.
The same went for food.
Eggs and bacon,
ordinary toast and pancakes.
Rather than order something
we could easily make at home,
I wanted to try something new.
We decided to order
two different dishes
and share a little of each.
Dining out is where we discover new flavors.
Home is where we make the ones we love our own.
