COGNITIVE SCIENCE
Stop Working Harder
Your best thinking happens in the quiet you leave for it.
You are not failing to focus. You are refusing to stop.
You know this afternoon.
Two hours on the same bug. Or the same model, the same strategy doc, the same email you cannot get right. You have tried everything. You are tired, and the work is getting worse.
So you do what you were taught. You push. Headphones on, timer running, another hour.
The productivity industry has a diagnosis ready: you lack discipline.
It’s wrong. You had plenty of discipline. You spent all of it on the one tactic that doesn’t work.
You are not failing to focus. You are refusing to stop.
The factory lie
The idea that more hours equal more output comes from the factory. On a lathe, five hours at the spindle yields about five times the parts of one hour. Brass is inert and the motion is uniform, so time in means work out.
Then we applied that arithmetic to the one kind of work it cannot describe.
Thought is not brass. Past a certain point, each extra hour at the spindle does not give you more insight. It takes insight away.
