Master Basic Maths Signs
Math doesn’t have to be scary. In fact, the basics—like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—are simple once you understand the rules behind positive and negative numbers. Whether you’re a student, a parent helping your child, or someone brushing up on math, this article will guide you through the foundational concepts using real examples and easy language.
1. Addition and Subtraction: Don’t Fear the Signs
Let’s break down how signs affect your answers. I want to make it more simple.
Adding two positive numbers
→ The result is positive
→ It is simply the sum of both numbers
Example: +5 + 4 = 9
Adding a positive and a negative number
→ Subtract the smaller from the bigger
→ Keep the sign of the larger number
Example: +5 - 4 = 1
Adding a negative and a positive number
→ Again, subtract and keep the sign of the bigger number
Example: +4 - 5 = -1
Adding two negative numbers
→ The result is negative
→ Add their absolute values, then put a minus sign
Example: -4 - 5 = -9
When you subtract a bigger number from a smaller number, the answer is negative. it’s like losing more than you have.
Multiplication
multiplying two positive numbers
→ The result is positive
Example: +5 × +4 = 20
Multiplying or dividing a positive and a negative number
→ The result is negative
Example: +5 × -4 = -20
Multiplying or dividing a negative and a positive number
→ The result is still negative
Example: -5 × +4 = -20
Multiplying or dividing two negative numbers
→ The result is positive
Example: -5 × -4 = 20
Rule to Remember for multiplication
When signs are the same, the answer is positive.
When signs are different, the answer is negative.
Division
Just like multiplication, the sign rules for division are exactly the same. The number's sign determines whether the final result is positive or negative.
Dividing two positive numbers
→ The result is positive
Example: +10 ÷ +2 = 5
Dividing a positive number by a negative number
→ The result is negative
Example: +10 ÷ -2 = -5
Dividing a negative number by a positive number
→ The result is negative
Example: -10 ÷ +2 = -5
Dividing two negative numbers
→ The result is positive
Example: -10 ÷ -2 = 5
Rule for Division (it is same as multiplication)
if the signs of both the numbers are same( ++ or - -) , the result is positive
if the signs of both the number are different (positive and negative), the result is negative
let’s solve some examples
12 ÷ 4 = 3
-12 ÷ 4 = -3
12 ÷ -4 = -3
-12 ÷ -4 = 3
Multiplication:
-7 × 5 = -35 (Negative × Positive = Negative)
-7 × -5 = 35 (Negative × Negative = Positive)
Addition & Subtraction:
7 - 5 = 2
-2 × -5 = 10
1 + 2 = 3
4 - 2 = 2
2 - 1 = 1
-1 - 2 = -3

These sign rules aren't just for exams. You use them in daily life:
Calculating profits (positive) and losses (negative),Tracking temperatures (rise = positive, fall = negative),Managing bank accounts (credits and debits),Coding, budgeting, planning… etc...
Understanding how signs work is the key to unlocking confidence in math. Once these simple rules are clear in your mind, you’ll never be confused by a minus sign again!
So next time you’re solving a problem, just pause and ask:
Am I adding or subtracting?
Are the signs same or different?
Thankyou !
