Excellent article. I left the academic computing world in 1992, so I guess I missed a lot of the censorship and controversy. I was aware of the controversial aspects of Usenet, especially the "alt.*" stuff. E-Mail and file privacy was problematic, because the sys-admins had total access. We had a couple of incidents involving very embarrassing e-mail leaks. My rule of thumb was to treat anything exchanged online (e-mail, BITNET, or Usenet) like it could be published it in the newspaper. Sounds like you were right there in the thick of things. Good job.
