Script and Screenplay

Approximately two hours ago, I was with one of my friends, Virendra, and we were discussing the topic “Script vs Screenplay.”

We discussed it for almost an hour. But after he went back to his room, I was sitting alone in my room, thinking about what script and screenplay actually mean.

And you won’t believe it, but I started relating these two terms to my own past experiences. I began to wonder whether the things we experience in life are somehow connected to a script that has already been written, while the way we react to those experiences is our own screenplay.

Do you know what a script is?

I think a script is something we cannot change. We may be a part of it willingly or unwillingly, but we have to play our part. Birth and death are two truths of life. If a person is born, they will eventually have to face death. Perhaps, this is a part of the script.

But there is another way to look at it. If you are not an atheist and believe in God, you must have heard the saying,.. “Niyati ne jo likha hai, woh hokar rahega”. whatever God or destiny has written will eventually happen.

You may try to change the course of events, resist them, or even try to stop them, but perhaps you cannot escape what is already destined to happen. No matter how hard you try, things may ultimately unfold according to a plan beyond your understanding.

That, to me, is what a script means.

What is Screenplay?
A screenplay, on the other hand, is the way you act, behave, and respond in different situations.

Think of yourself as an actor in a movie. An actor performs each scene under the guidance of a director. Similarly, we all seem to be playing our roles under the direction of some invisible force an energy we cannot see but can only feel.

Sometimes, it feels as if someone is guiding us, and we are simply acting accordingly. But honestly, I don’t know. I cannot explain it literally; I can only imagine it.

Perhaps life is like a movie. The script has already been written by someone we cannot see, while the screenplay is unfolding through our actions, reactions, emotions, and experiences.

And in the end, we arrive at a point that may have already been written in the script by an unseen author , someone we might imagine as God, if we believe in one.

Maybe the script is what is destined to happen, while the screenplay is how we live through it.
