Flattened grass forms an irregular pressed patch among taller surrounding blades, as if something had recently sat there.

by the time I get there
I am already younger

the driveway does some of it
gravel under the tires
then the side door
sticking once
before it gives

heat first
then that closed-in mix
of food
coffee gone old in the pot
something sweet
left out too long

someone says my name
from the other room
the old way
as if I have just been outside
not gone for years

I keep my coat on
through hello
through the first few questions
listening for where to stand

the kitchen shrinks
until I step into it
then opens back up
chair legs under the table
the calendar turned
a dish towel
over the oven handle
a note in someone else’s hand
where hers would have been
