AIAD Tooling: Adopt GSD Lite for the best of GSD (Get Shit Done) with Minimal Process

GSD is a popular GitHub repo designed to support AI-assisted development (AIAD) through Spec-Driven Development (SDD). Its key differentiator is a small set of stateful files that persist LLM interactions while minimizing the context sent with each prompt.

GSD Lite is an alternative approach that takes the essential elements of GSD and applies them in a lightweight manner — without requiring full adoption of SDD.

The simplest tool is often the best — but still tricky to select, even if you are an AI (recall the Rule of Least Power from Software Engineering). [Image generated by an AI — gpt-image-1-mini]

This article follows on from my previous post which introduced AIAD Tooling including OpenCode, Claude SpecKit and GSD. This article presents GSD Lite as a less opinionated and cheaper-up-front approach to introducing GSD into your project workflow.

What is GSD?

At its core, GSD (unfortunately, Get Shit Done) is a workflow for building software with LLMs that tries to fix a fundamental issue: LLMs are powerful, but they are also forgetful, inconsistent, and easily derailed. There is a popular and well-document github repo.

GSD addresses this with three ideas: make development stateful, introduce just enough structure, and be disciplined about context.

Why GSD Works

  • Prevents context explosion
