How I Learned Next.js in 30 Days (Roadmap + Mistakes)
On Day 9, I deployed my first Next.js app. It crashed in production with an error I had never seen in development.
I had a hydration error, an env variable that was undefined, and a page that took four seconds to load. I stared at the screen and thought, "I know React. Why is this so confusing?"
The answer was simple: Next.js is not just React. It is a full framework with its own rules about where your code runs, how data loads, and how pages are built.
Who This Is For
This roadmap works best if you already know:
- HTML and CSS basics
- JavaScript fundamentals (functions, arrays,
async/await) - React basics (components, props,
useState)
If React still feels shaky, spend a week on it first. Next.js will be much easier afterward.
Why Next.js?
Plain React gives you the UI. Next.js gives you everything around it:
- File-based routing: create a folder, get a page
- Server and client rendering: pages that load fast and rank on Google
- Built-in backend: API routes and server actions, no separate server needed
