Kālī and Kṛṣṇa: The Prakṛti Connection
Episode 4 of the Kālī–Kṛṣṇa Sahasranāma Series
In the previous episodes, we explored the names Kṛṣṇa and Nārāyaṇī in the Adya Kālī tradition and placed them alongside the Kṛṣṇa Sahasranāma.
Now we come to a more philosophical name:
Prakṛti.
Kālī Sahasranāma
In the Adya MahaKali Sahasranaama, the name appears as:
№279 — STRĪ-PRAKṚTIḤ
The name brings us directly into the language of Prakṛti, the primordial nature or creative principle through which manifestation unfolds.
For Śākta thought, this is especially significant. Kālī is not merely a deity who acts within creation. She can be understood as the Śakti through which creation, transformation and manifestation take place.
Kṛṣṇa Sahasranāma
In our fixed Śrī Kṛṣṇa Sahasranāmāvaliḥ, we find:
№297 — PRAKṚTAYE
The Sanskrit text gives:
प्रकृतये नमः ।

Here Kṛṣṇa is directly associated with Prakṛti. The surrounding names include Pradhānātmā, Mūrtāmūrtadvayākṛti, Anekamūrti, and Sakalāvaraṇopeta, creating a distinctly metaphysical sequence.
The Comparison

This is an important distinction from simply finding the same personal name.
Here, the shared concept is Prakṛti itself.
Kālī is approached through the language of feminine Prakṛti, while Kṛṣṇa is explicitly named Prakṛti in his Sahasranāma.
Does this establish that Kṛṣṇa and Kālī are identical?
Maybe…
it strengthens the question we are investigating.
If Kālī represents the dynamic Śakti through which Reality manifests, and Kṛṣṇa is also described through the principle of Prakṛti, then perhaps the relationship between the two traditions is more philosophically intricate than a simple division between “Kālī” and “Kṛṣṇa.”
The next question is whether this connection continues when we examine a new name.
