Eli carried the glass to the sink even though nobody had asked him to.
He set it beside the other dishes, stopped, and picked it up again. His mother used to like a glass of water close enough to reach without having to call him. He had become good at remembering where to put it.
Sometimes he forgot, and she had to call twice.
He held the glass a little longer than he needed to, then washed it and put it away.
Outside, two birds were arguing over a space on the feeder that could have held six birds. A squirrel raced across the rail. The mountain was bright with leaves, and Eli had a whole notebook of questions about how trees knew when to change colors.
The kitchen stayed quiet.
He remembered an afternoon when he had been trying to finish a drawing before he forgot how his invention was supposed to work. His mother called from the next room.
“Just a minute,” he said.
