We’ve all met that person. The one who has a sharp, unsolicited opinion about everything. They judge how someone dresses, how loudly someone laughs, or how someone chooses to live their life.

It’s exhausting to be around. But if you stop and look closely, you’ll realize something fascinating:

You can tell exactly how much internal shame someone is carrying by how judgmental they are.

When we point a finger outward, we are almost always trying to distract ourselves from something inward.

The Shadows We Hide

The math is simple: the more judgment someone dishes out, the more internal shame they are carrying.

But it goes deeper than that. you ever noticed that your judgments , and the judgments of others are often super specific?

You don’t just judge “people.” You judge the person who sets strict boundaries, or the person who is wildly unapologetic about their ambition, or the person who dresses loudly.

Because those specific judgments are the exact things you aren’t understanding about yourself. They are the traits you aren’t fixing, or worse, the parts of yourself you aren’t even allowing yourself to look at.

If you are terrified of being perceived as “lazy,” you will brutally judge anyone who takes a rest. If you were taught that being quiet is the only way to be safe, you will feel a spike of irritation at someone who takes up space.

Imagine how much softer the world would feel if, instead of reacting, we used our irritation as data. By monitoring your own judgments, you get a roadmap to your own insecurities. You finally get to see where you are coming from , which magically allows you to see where everyone else is coming from, too.

The Light We Forgot

Thankfully, this psychological mirror isn’t just for uncovering our dark corners. It brings us to the other side of the coin , and this is the beautiful part.

What you admire in others already exists in you

Think about the person you can’t stop watching. That pull you feel toward them. The way they carry themselves, the way they speak without apology, or the effortless way they take up space like they’ve earned every square inch of it.

You don’t just notice that behavior. You recognize it.

There is a massive difference between noticing and recognizing. Your eyes cannot admire what your soul has no reference for. You literally cannot see a beautiful quality in someone else if you don’t already carry it inside yourself.

That lifestyle you keep calling “goals”? That creator you keep saving to your phone?

That isn’t envy. That’s a mirror.

When you feel that magnetic pull toward someone else’s light, here is the ultimate truth: You aren’t chasing them. You are remembering yourself.

You are remembering the version of you that got buried under years of being told to be smaller, quieter, and more acceptable. You were taught to dim your light so others wouldn’t be blinded, and you did it to survive.

But that pull you feel when you see someone living fully? It isn’t just admiration. It’s a signal.

It is the wildest, truest part of you. the part that is still on guard, waiting for the right moment, finally pointing at something safe to become.

So the next time you look out into the world, pay attention. The things that trigger you are showing you where you need healing. The things that inspire you are showing you where you are going.

Listen to the mirror. It’s trying to bring you home.
