Graph Engineering Explained: Why AI Engineers Are Moving Beyond Loop Engineering
Prompt Engineering taught AI models how to think. Context Engineering taught them what to remember. Graph Engineering teaches them how to work.
A year ago, if you asked someone how to build an AI application, the answer was surprisingly simple:
“Write a better prompt.”
Then prompts became too limiting.
So we started giving models memory.
Soon after, we introduced retrieval systems, vector databases, tools, function calling, and multi-step workflows.
Then came the era of AI agents.
Instead of answering one question, AI systems could now browse the web, write code, query databases, call APIs, verify their own answers, and even collaborate with other AI agents.
But there was a problem.
Most of these “agents” weren’t really intelligent systems.
They were just loops.
Think
↓
Act
↓
Observe
↓
Think Again
↓
Repeat...This pattern worked surprisingly well for simple automation.
However, as AI systems became more capable, developers began encountering the same challenges that distributed systems engineers solved years ago.
