Tieshka K. Smith is a Philadelphia-based photographer and writer exploring Black cultural life, memory, and community. For more than a decade, she has documented the Philadelphia Juneteenth Festival in Germantown, capturing its growth and evolution, along with the ways it centers Black families, culture, commerce, and activism. Her work is rooted in visual storytelling, design research, and community archiving, highlighting rituals, spaces, and stories that often go unseen.
Her debut book, Compositions of Black Joy: A Visual Chronicle of the Philadelphia Juneteenth Festival (2015–2022), grew from this long-term documentation, offering a nuanced visual record of the Festival’s traditions, vibrant energy, and community resilience. By pairing archival photographs with contemporary images, the book links Germantown to the broader history of Juneteenth, tracing connections to Galveston, Texas—the birthplace of Juneteenth—and the ongoing struggle to preserve and celebrate Black freedom.
Through her photography and writing, Smith illuminates the structures, practices, and moments that sustain community life. She invites readers to reflect on joy, memory, and cultural continuity, and to consider how celebrations like the Philadelphia Juneteenth Festival function not only as public events but as vital acts of collective memory, empowerment, and resilience.
