Google is introducing Bring Your Own Agent (BYOA) in Android Studio.
The interesting part?
You are no longer limited to using just one AI agent inside your IDE.
🔹 𝟭. 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁
You can connect ACP-compatible agents such as:
• Claude Agent
• OpenAI Codex
• Google Antigravity
Use the agent that works best for your task.
🔹 𝟮. 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁
Android Studio can provide project context such as:
• Project structure
• Build configuration
• Android platform details
• Dependencies
So the agent doesn’t have to start completely from scratch.
🔹 𝟯. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀

Agents can work with Android Studio capabilities such as:
• Build diagnostics
• Jetpack Compose Previews
• Android SDK tools
• Emulator
Imagine asking an agent to make a Compose change, build the app, and help test it in the emulator.
🔹 𝟰. 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗼 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗲
Depending on permissions, agents can:
👉 Read/write files
👉 Run commands
👉 Run tests
👉 Search the web
👉 Delegate tasks to subagents
And importantly, developers still control what actions require approval.
💡 𝗠𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆
The interesting shift isn’t simply:
“Android Studio has AI.”
It’s:
“Android Studio can become a platform where different AI agents work with Android-specific tools.”
That gives developers more choice in how they use AI during development.
🤔 Would you prefer one AI agent deeply integrated into your IDE, or the freedom to switch between different agents?
