How Many Days Do Your Muscles Actually Need to Recover?

“Coach, how many days do muscles need to recover?”

I keep seeing trainers say that muscles need 24 to 72 hours to recover, depending on whether the muscle is small or large.

They say the abs need 24 hours, the biceps and triceps need around 24 hours, while larger muscles like the quads and glutes need up to 72 hours.

All of that is wrong.

“But Coach, this has been common knowledge for years. I’ve been hearing it for more than 20 years. Could all of it really be wrong?”

Of course it’s wrong.

Muscle recovery is never the same from one training session to another. Different amounts of training volume mean different recovery times.

And it has nothing to do with whether a muscle is small or large.

For example, a small muscle like the biceps can sometimes be trained much harder during a session than your quads. That means it could actually take longer to recover than your quads.
