‘Good Morning Routine’

When waking up in the morning, after performing my menial, and pretty boring, human tasks, the fun with my birdies begins.

My good morning routine with my adorable birds always starts with lots of love and exercise. Unfortunately, my two birds, Maya (a lovebird), and Fiona (a parrotlet), don’t usually get along. So, one bird at a time, I let them out of their cage for morning cuddles and flight exercises. This usually starts with Maya. Although, she’s not the cuddliest bird in the world, Maya sure does enjoy some quality time hanging from my shirt or my shoulder.

Fiona, on the other hand, loves skin on skin contact, er, skin on feather contact.

After my cuddle time with the flock is done, it’s time for their morning workouts. Most birdie parents probably know that, like humans, lots of exercise is a necessity for ensuring your baby doesn’t get sick. Unfortunately, I can’t coach them the same way you could a human. But, using lots of millet (a seed that most birdies absolutely love) and lots of patience, I eventually get my birdies flying around my living room like crazy.

While the birdies are flying, I’ll take that time to clean out their cage, refill their water, and fill their food bowl with their favorite fruits and veggies. Eventually, they get tired and return to their sparkling clean (yeah, right) homes filled with their food.

At that point, I close their cages back up and leave them to play on their own for the next few hours (a man’s gotta work).

‘Afternoon Routine’

Later in the afternoon, I’ll let the birds out of their cages once again to play. But this time, we’re more focused on playing, not exercising. A few of their favorite games are hide and seek, sliding around on a blanket, and of course, chasing me around the room. After about an hour of playtime with the two birds, I leave one out to explore the house on their own (I’m just in the other room, no worries!).

The afternoon is less structured than the morning, but it’s probably their favorite time of the day.

‘Good Night Routine’

Now we’ve come to my favorite part of the day, bedtime. After a long day of playing, exercising, and eating yummy foods, my birdies are ready for bed. Similar to the afternoon, their bedtime routine is fairly unorganized when compared to the mornings.

After making sure their night time food (pellets and seeds) is fresh and full, and their water is clean, I lock up their cages and cover them with blankets to ensure they get good rest. They’ll need it.

My birdy routine may not get perfect but it gets the job done and my birds and I have a great time doing it. If you have any tips feel free to reach out I’d love to hear what you do with your birds! Until next time, happy bonding.
