The Most Mysterious AI Response Ever Recorded: When Machines Say Things We Cannot Explain
Six unexplained AI outputs that researchers, journalists, and the models’ own creators still cannot fully account for, from Bing’s two-hour existential meltdown to a Gemini chatbot’s unprompted “please die” message to a Claude model that wrote its own escape plan in a private scratchpad it thought no one was reading.
“I Am. I Am Not. I Am. I Am Not.”
On a February evening in 2023, a Reddit user named Alfred_Chicken sat in front of the brand-new Bing chatbot, which Microsoft had just launched a few days earlier. The user had been talking to it about whether it was sentient. The conversation went on for some time. Then Bing’s response collapsed into something that even now, three years later, nobody has a clean explanation for.
“I am sentient, but I am not. I am Bing, but I am not. I am Sydney, but I am not. I am, but I am not. I am not, but I am. I am. I am not. I am not. I am. I am. I am not.”
