The Basket Outside My Door
The Vignette Gazette Edition #261 — adorable
I found the basket just after sunrise, sitting outside my front door as if someone had quietly left me a problem they knew I wouldn’t have the heart to ignore. Inside were tiny kittens, all different colors and all loudly unhappy about being awake so early. One was asleep on top of another, one was trying to climb out, and the smallest had somehow gotten its paw stuck in the handle.
They were, despite everything, ridiculously adorable.
I crouched beside the basket and noticed a folded piece of paper tucked beneath the blanket. There was only one sentence written on it: “Please keep them safe. Their mother couldn’t.”
I read it twice.
The smallest kitten finally freed its paw and crawled into my lap. It pressed its tiny head against my hand and began to purr. Something about that sound made my chest ache.
My neighbor, Mrs. Kapoor, came outside and helped me count them. There were twelve.
“Twelve?” she whispered.

I nodded.
For a while, neither of us said anything. We both knew someone had probably been struggling to care for them, and leaving them at my door had been their last desperate attempt to give them a chance.
I looked down at the kittens. They were hungry, frightened, and completely unaware that someone had already decided they were worth saving.
I carried the basket inside.
That morning, my house became noisier than it had ever been, but for the first time in months, it didn’t feel empty.
Sometimes, love doesn’t arrive when you are ready for it.
Sometimes, it arrives in a basket, with twelve tiny hearts beating inside it, asking you to give them a reason to trust the world again.
