What If….
About Happiness and Life
‘What if we praised the living, not just the gone,
Watered our bonds before we moved on,
Loved what we have, not what we miss,
Learned from each fall, got up and moved on with a smile,
Then wouldn’t life be love; a beautiful, lasting bliss?
What if we said it while they could still hear it?
Last evening, I was at the memorial service of Raghu mama, my maternal uncle. One by one, people got up and spoke about how kind, how witty, and how generous he was. His two sons, too, had only praise of their father. Beautiful words. And I was sitting there thinking if Raghu mama really knew of all these qualities that he seemed to possess? In fact, I remember all the times that his sons, my cousins, would only complain about him to me! And now I was seeing them so emotional and heartbroken. There wasn’t any doubt in their love for their father, but had they ever expressed the same to Raghu mama? All they had expressed when he was alive was their anger and disappointment in him, about how difficult it was to put up with him, and now all these beautiful expressions when he is gone? Can he hear them? Can he know how his sons loved him? How much they respected him?
