I sort of ended up recreating the Power BI Service in four hours over the weekend. That was not the original plan. Now; sure, I realize that of course that was the next logical step after The Power BI Killer. However, my intention was to simply plant that seed in somebody else’s mind and thus let someone else do all the work. Because I’m lazy like that.
But, nope, here we are. A full blown web application using open source technologies like DuckDB, Parquet and Polars coupled with Python. Let’s do the list of features:
You can import a PBIX file, PBIP file along with its folders, ZIP file or even self-contained HTML reports
Power BI reports are automatically broken up into a semantic model using DuckDB, Parquet, Polars as well as their report pages
Reports are interactive and use Vega-Lite
You can view all tables, measures, and relationships in the semantic model
You can execute SQL queries against the semantic model
Custom visuals are fully supported and you can import and test them within the interface
Support for 186 DAX functions
You can export the open semantic model
Basic authentication as well as support for Entra ID and Google federated authentication
