Here’s something that not many people are discussing, how Microsoft is killing off ODBC in Power BI and Fabric. That’s right. ODBC, that nice stable connectivity protocol that’s been around for decades and decades and lets you connect to just about anything. Well, Microsoft has decided that ODBC sucks and that they’re doing away with it. The replacement? Apache Arrow Database Connectivity, ADBC, instead of ODBC.

Now, this has been going on for quite some time under the radar. And I’m not saying to panic over this or anything, but it could blindside you and potentially cause a problem or two if you’re not paying attention.

So, what exactly is changing? Specifically, the following connectors are impacted:

  • Databricks
  • Azure Databricks
  • Dremio
  • Google BigQuery
  • Hive
  • Impala
  • Snowflake
  • Spark,

These are the connectors being impacted. Historically, these connectors have used Simba ODBC connectors. These Simba ODBC connectors are being replaced by Databricks ADBC, Flight SQL ADBC, BigQuery ADBC, Hive Server 8.2 ADBC and Snowflake ADBC. Hive is being completely deprecated.
