We Have Never Been More Comfortable. So Why Are We So Uncomfortable?

There is something particularly strange about modern life. We bathe in levels of comfort, convenience and material abundance that would have been unimaginable to almost every generation that came before us. We have also largely solved many of the physical problems that dominated human existence for thousands of years. Food is readily available, shelter is relatively secure, transport is fast, information is almost limitless and technology can perform tasks that once required considerable amounts of human labour.

Yet the psychological experience of modern life doesn’t seem to reflect this extraordinary progress. Anxiety, loneliness, dissatisfaction and a persistent sense of unease remain common and widely discussed features of contemporary life.

The paradox is difficult to ignore — we have become exceptionally good at making life comfortable, but comfort alone does not seem to make us happy.
