Integrate Python Apps with OpenTelemetry

Add traces, metrics, and logs that help you understand why an application is slow or failing.

A Python API starts taking three seconds to respond instead of 200 milliseconds. The server is still running. CPU usage looks normal. Your logs show successful requests, and the database appears healthy.

So where is the time going?

Maybe a database query became slower. Maybe an external API is timing out. Maybe one request is triggering an unexpected retry loop. Or perhaps the application is spending most of its time waiting for a service you do not control.

Without useful telemetry, these problems become a guessing game.

You add more log statements, reproduce the issue locally, inspect a few database queries, and hope something stands out. Sometimes it does. Often, the problem disappears before you understand what caused it.

OpenTelemetry offers a better approach. It gives your Python application a standard way to produce traces, metrics, and logs, making it possible to investigate what happened inside a request and how the application behaved over time.

The interesting part is not collecting more data. It is connecting the data so you can move from “the API is slow”…
