10 Rust Crates I’d Study Before Starting My Next Systems Project
redb, jiff, zerocopy, bon, facet, moka, tracing, rmcp, Ratatui, and DataFusion each solve a problem differently enough to change how I would design the surrounding system.
This is not a list of dependencies I would blindly paste into Cargo.toml. Some of these crates overlap only loosely, several solve problems that many projects will never have, and a few are still moving quickly. I am interested in them because each one exposes an architectural decision that systems code often leaves implicit.
The versions discussed here are current as of October 2026: redb 4.3, jiff 0.2.38, zerocopy 0.8.61, bon 3.10.2, facet 0.46.5, moka 0.12.16, tracing 0.1.44, rmcp 3.5.1, Ratatui 0.30.2, and DataFusion 55.1.0. Facet already has 0.50 release candidates, which is one reason I would study its design before treating its API as permanent.
redb Makes Local Persistence an Architectural Choice
A surprising number of systems projects eventually invent a database badly. They begin with JSON files, add atomic renames, introduce indexes, need concurrent reads, and finally discover that crash recovery is now application logic.
