A Hundred Years Ago
A poem about love, music, and the same sky
The sky flushed crimson, burning bright
As in tonight’s sunset glow,
And hid a caravel from sight
A hundred years ago!
Beyond the easel, sharp and stern,
Black letters formed, row upon row,
Modi’s letter to Hébuterne,
A hundred years ago!
They loved with passion, loved with trust,
Sought meetings, signs, and where to go,
And waited, restless, as lovers must,
A hundred years ago!
The first grey birds of parting flew
To Marina in Moscow fair,
Sent by Sonechka’s hands that knew
That fateful year, back there…
And music? Still it struck the same:
A jolt, a charge, a sudden blow,
It raised the dead, it set aflame
A hundred years ago!
In White Bay, in a bright restaurant hall,
Di Sarli’s melodies would flow,
Fierce and new, resounding for all,
A hundred years ago!
