There are weeks when inspiration arrives like lightning.

There are other weeks when inspiration is the guy using the machine you wanted at the gym, a job application disappearing into the digital abyss, or the lingering realization that you once spent an alarming amount of money to attend an absolutely disastrous wedding.

This was one of those weeks.

Annoyance is not usually considered a particularly productive emotion. Nobody puts “mildly irritated” on a motivational poster. But irritation does have one useful quality: it gives you material.

This week, The Saturday Night makes something out of it.

In The Worst Wedding Ever, one expensive weekend proves that family legends are made to be broken. In our Official Guide to Modern Job Hunting, we navigate a hiring process apparently designed by people who thought applying for employment needed more side quests. And in Homeroom, an innocent trip to the gym provides another reminder that sometimes the people who occupy enormous amounts of space in your brain have absolutely no idea who you are.

None of these situations were particularly funny while they were happening.

That’s usually how it works.

Given enough time, frustration turns into a story. Embarrassment becomes a punchline. The thing that ruined your afternoon becomes the thing you can’t wait to tell somebody about later.

You can’t always control what happens to you.

You can, however, get a column out of it.

Welcome to Issue 12.

Until Next Saturday,

— Paul
