I wasted three months building agents before I could debug a single one.
I started with a popular framework, copied a tutorial, and watched my agent book a fake meeting. I felt like a genius. Then I changed the model, and the whole thing fell apart. It looped, called the wrong tool, and burned through my API credits while I stared at the logs with no idea what I was looking at.
The problem was not the framework. I had learned the shiny layer first and skipped the layers underneath it.
So here is the short answer, and then the long one.
To become an agentic AI engineer, learn in this order: solid Python and software engineering, LLM fundamentals and prompting, tool calling and structured outputs, retrieval and memory, the agent loop and orchestration, evaluation and observability, and finally production deployment and safety. Frameworks come after you understand the loop, not before.
Each stage below tells you what to learn, why it comes at that point, and what to build to prove you got it.
