We spent seven days driving around Iceland and picked up a few things along the way that I think are worth knowing before you go.
Some are practical, like what to pack and how to pay for parking. Others are things you might not think about until you’re standing in the wind, miles from the nearest town, wondering why you didn’t bring a snack.
Here are 14 things I’d recommend knowing before your own Iceland road trip:
1. Bring food for when you land
When you land at Keflavík Airport, don’t assume you can grab exactly what you want to eat or drink straight away. There are food and convenience options for arriving passengers, but what’s available and where you find it can vary. In our case, some airside shops required an onward boarding pass because they were serving departing or transit passengers.
Basically, if you’re thinking “I’ll just buy some food when I land” it’s worth having a backup plan, especially if you’re arriving late or heading straight out on a long drive. We only managed to buy food after immigration, duty free, customs clearance, and baggage claim.
