Things I didn't win at

Usually when I'm wailing

I had heard these words on my way home "things I had failed out this year", and as the driver argued with the Lagos agbero for "owoda", my mind went to places I believed I did not have a pass mark during the year.

Pictures of the free and paid trials of each event came playing one by one, and by the time we got to Maryland traffic, I was a bit ashamed. I looked at a billboard which said, "Many will admire it, and few will own it", and started thinking of the many things I had admired and still do not owe. I thought again deeply about the things I had failed, the ones I was too scared even to dare, and the ones I had just written their exams and awaiting the teachers' red or blue biro mark.

For someone who grew up a winner, firstborn, best in maths, solving life problems, giving advice, and cracking jokes just to make everyone happy. I have a feeble response to failure. By the time the bus parked at Ikeja underbridge, I had headphones on and was trying so hard to use music to distract my thoughts of failure.

When I got home and took my laptop (Akwa Ugo) to work again, I just knew that no matter the passing marks or number of failures I counted from yaba to Ikeja, there were some things I would never give up on, so I continued my work and stop counting my failures till next time.

Things my failures have taught me

  1. It is better to have failed at something than regret not trying
  2. Failures taught me the best way to some stuff
  3. Failure reminded me that I wasn't Superman and I couldn't do everything
  4. Failure reminded me that they would always be better another time to retry
  5. Failure taught me that a pass mark is a pass mark and failure is a failure, no sitting on the fence

So I took note of the things I had failed at this year, and as I write, I'm retrying every damn thing except "adding weight" that one I don give up!
