G7 Agrees On Shared Language Around Open-Source AI, Open Weights AI

Ahead of the 52nd G7 Summit being held in Evian, France next month, the recently conducted G7 Digital and Technology Ministers’ Meeting came to agreement on shared language around open-source AI and on the importance of open-source in AI.

The G7 Digital and Technology Ministers’ Meeting led to a document being agreed to for addressing the technical and economic principles of open-source AI models and shared language around different levels of open AI models. The G7 vision on AI openness also outlines principles of being community-driven, AI Openness being a spectrum as noted with the shared language, and multiple elements to making up AI.

The adopted language around AI includes:

Open Source AI with Open Data:

Open Source AI with Open Data is AI released free of charge under an Open Source license, including its models’ weights, deployment code, training code, and full training data.

Open Source AI:

Open Source AI is AI released free of charge under an Open Source license, including its models’ weights, deployment code, training code, and possibly full training data.

However, exceptions to full training data availability may apply where sharing is legally or technically impossible. In such cases, Data Information about the unavailable data is to be provided in its place.

Open Weights AI:

Open Weights AI is AI released free of charge along with its weights and deployment code, under an Open Source License.

Weights Available AI:

Weights Available AI is AI released free of charge along with its weights and deployment code under a license which includes restrictions on how they can be used, such as commercial, geographical, or usecase restrictions.

Well at least the G7 was able to come to an agreement on that shared language around AI.
