Not the whole truth

I'm wary but accepting of the fact that I am surrounded by lies. Everybody does it. Me too, except I only tell the littlest white lies, and only to protect those around me from knowing the whole ugly truth. Why should they worry? So what I actually do is something correct and, in a way, noble — I protect others from the unpleasant truth. I take the reality of the situation on my shoulders and go with it and take care of it. It is enough that I know, and that only I deal with it. Of course, I also know that I am not being told the whole truth by others. Even those close to me. Or those I think are close to me. Of course, I catch inconsistencies and hesitant body language, and know what is going on. But I don’t catch anybody red-handed in the act of not telling me the whole truth. That would be unpleasant and embarrassing for both parties to acknowledge this deficiency. So I nod, they nod, and we go ahead with common knowledge that things were unsaid. Of course, there is no knowledge of the details of things unsaid, but that is only of secondary importance. I will figure out those details myself, and the more outrageous scenarios my mind creates to fill the blanks, the better. This way I can be disappointed, dejected, angry, superior, and righteous at the same time. I know better, even if I don't know at all.
