Liberation —From Killing Centaurs to Killing Widows and Her Daughters

Immortal Chiron|The Death of Pholus|Augean Stables|Stymphalian Birds|Stymphalus’ Women

Having uncontrollable power is a disaster. The blessings can be even more of a curse. Stones can be turned gold, and brutal killings can be packaged as heroic legends.

Immortal Chiron

Centaurus (Ancient Greek: κένταυρος, Romanized: kéntauros; Latin: Centaurus) had the torso of a horse and the upper body of a man. We told the story of Ixion (Greek: Ἰξίων) in “Written in the Stars·Curses — Satyr Legend”. Ixion lusted after Hera, the wife of Zeus. Zeus realized Ixion’s intentions and created a cloud in the shape of Hera, named Nephele (Ancient Greek: Νεφέλη, romanized: Nephélē, lit. ‘cloud, mass of clouds’), to test Ixion. Ixion and the false Hera tumbled and gave birth to Imbrus (Ancient Greek: Ἴμβρος) and Centaurus. Centaurus mated with a Magnesia (Ancient Greek: Μαγνησία) mare on Mount Pelion, giving rise to a race of centaurs, also known as Hippocentaur, or the Ixionidae (Ancient Greek: Ἰξιονίδαι, romanized: Ixionídai), literally “sons of Ixion.”
