Open-Sourcing an MCP Container for WeChat Mini Programs

Why did we build and open-source this container?

In one sentence: so that in the future, every consumer-facing agent — especially small and mid-size ones — can connect to Mini Program MCP and call its services.

A few days ago, WeChat released a Mini Program MCP specification. It turns mini programs into Skills, so WeChat agents can make better use of mini-program capabilities.

A lot of the design is solid: Skills, atomic APIs and atomic components, and using a custom MCP to describe interfaces. Atomic components in particular are a nice design that can improve the interaction experience.

But after analyzing Mini Program MCP, we found a problem.

Using Mini Program MCP requires integrating with a host system — for example, registering on the WeChat Open Platform and supporting WeChat login.

For reach, developers will almost certainly support the WeChat ecosystem, and also Alipay and Douyin. But they are unlikely to do separate work just to support small and mid-size developers’ consumer agents (agents positioned similarly to WeChat’s own agent). The cost probably does not add up.

That makes it very hard for consumer agents built by small developers and startups to tap into the large Mini Program MCP ecosystem.

And that is the problem we set out to solve: let agents from small and mid-size developers connect to the Mini Program MCP ecosystem conveniently and at low cost.

The key is to define an open access path so those agents can plug into Mini Program MCP easily.

The most central question is how to do identity authentication: how a consumer agent tells the mini program who is using the service.

What ANP can provide is an identity authentication scheme based on the W3C DID standard, optimized for agents, with strong interoperability.

Going forward, we hope Mini Program MCP developers can support WeChat, Alipay, and Douyin identities to join the big-platform ecosystems, and also support an open identity scheme — DID — to connect the broad ecosystem of small and mid-size agents (which, taken together, is also a large pool of traffic).

That way, mini-program service providers develop once and can serve every consumer agent, building a truly open ecosystem.

So we built and open-sourced this container. Through it, a consumer agent can:

  • Load Mini Program MCP Skills
  • Log into the mini program and complete identity authentication with DID. Before login, the consumer agent does not need to register with the mini-program provider, and the provider does not need to register on the agent side. Like email, they can recognize each other directly.
  • Call mini-program services, render returned components, and interact with the user
  • Invoke intermediate capabilities such as fetching the user’s phone number and payment

In this design, we treat Mini Program MCP as an ANP Interface.

Technical core points

  1. We are not building a full mini-program container, and we do not support a complete mini-program UI. We do not think that is necessary. We are building an agent-native mini-program container: Skills, APIs, components, and agent identity underneath.
  2. The container plugs into the ANP SDK at the bottom and supports the DID identity authentication flow. When it sends HTTP requests, it automatically attaches identity signatures, so the agent and the mini program can authenticate each other.
  3. Fully compatible with the Mini Program MCP specification (the goal), to lower switching costs for mini-program developers. In principle, only the identity authentication part needs to change.
  4. After a mini-program provider receives a request, it can verify the caller’s identity from the DID in the request. No advance configuration is required, which lowers integration cost for both sides.

Of course, the current version is still early. Many capabilities are not fully supported yet.
