Awesome Games Done Quick 2021 | My most anticipated speedruns
The video game speedrunning marathon Awesome Games Done Quick 2021 starts today.
I’ve highlighted a few of the speedruns I am most looking forward to this week. See the full schedule here.
Games Done Quick is a bi-annual event where gamers play through video games very quickly. This showcase raises millions of dollars for Doctors Without Borders and the Percent Cancer Foundation every year.
As someone who doesn’t have as much time to play games myself, watching speedruns of my favorite games or even ones I’ve never heard of has allowed me to connect with my hobby without the hours of play they usually require.
Speedruns I’m looking forward to:
Mirror’s Edge — What a way to kickoff the event. Mirror’s Edge is a parkour action game that’s all about getting into a flow as players traverse minimalist levels. Looking forward to seeing the runner move like Sonic the Hedgehog.

Dishonored 2 — This game rewards players for thoughtful and technical approaches to combat. I’m looking forward to seeing how speedrunners have taken that mantra to the ultimate degree.
Hades — This game was on many 2020 Game of the Year lists and is one of my recent favorites. I can’t wait to see how high level players approach the game. Hopefully I can learn some tips to make my Hades runs smoother.
Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City — They don’t make games like they used to and this SNES game starring the GOAT will be no different. Expect some silly stuff and at least enjoy a time capsule of a game without having to play it yourself.
The Mummy — I chose this run for two reasons: it’s a licensed game of the film The Mummy starring Branden Fraser and two it’s a PS1 game. Expect plenty of game breaking strategies.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask — This game is already about manipulating time to save the world. The speedrunners here have definitely found ways to break the game to get down to an estimated completion time of 30 minutes.
Super Mario 64 — This run will feature a player collecting 15 stars blindfolded.
X-Men the Arcade Game — Arcade games were designed to take your quarters. It’ll be exciting to see this brawler perfected and to finally get revenge for all the coins this machine stole from my youth.
These are some of the runs I am most looking forward to. Which one’s do you have on your watch list? Why do you watch speedruns? Share your answers in the comments below.
