I found the ultimate hack to getting and keeping customers or finding and making friends.

Charm them!

Okay, I’m kidding. Or not. Walk with me shaa.

Have you ever been around someone who just makes the space feel lighter? Someone who you probably don’t remember the conversations you had but you actually remember how they made you feel?

People like that don’t come by easy but most importantly, people like that have learnt whether knowingly or unknowingly the power to just be. To exist yet make you feel safe. They have learnt how to make rooms feel lighter.

Sometimes you leave them but you can’t recall the jokes they told or quote anything profound they said. But for some reason, whenever you think of them, you smile.

But really, how can someone leave such a lasting impression?

If you have wondered too, I have an answer for you and that is; You have been charmed.

Not the type you think, no dark magic type shii.

Just by them been a relief from the weight you seem to be carrying without flattery, pretending or doing too much.

If you pay attention the next time you’re with people, you might notice it too.

You’re with people in same room, someone is sharing a story and before they’re even finished somebody is already jumping and the most ridiculous is, someone is sharing a pain and somehow someone else in the room thinks it’s the best time to have something worse and so they go, “Your own is better oo.” like pain is now a contest of who suffered more.

Someone celebrates an achievement. Another quickly mentions something similar they’ve accomplished.

Without realizing it, we’ve made conversations less about connecting and more about contributing. Everyone wants to be heard. Very few people want to listen.

And that’s what makes this other person different. They are just there in same room but they are listening. They let you complain, they let you rant, they let you celebrate and they don’t try to make themselves the hero. It’s like giving you a moment. It’s yours now, just shine.

They simply have a way of making people feel like they don’t have to compete. When you’re with them, you don’t feel judged. You don’t feel rushed.

You feel... lighter.

Now this is exactly how to deal with customers too.

Your customers are your hero. You’re not the hero, your brand is not the hero, and your company is not the hero.

You must make your customer the hero. Listen to them, don’t try to take their spotlight. Your content, product, marketing should simply focus on making them the hero, solving their problems and giving them relief.

Don’t try to butt in or act like this is also your problem. First, nobody cares about your own problem and second, if I had a problem that you claimed to solve and I walked up to you only to hear “me too”, I am walking away ASAP. I refuse to be a guinea pig.

You do not have to be extraordinary. You just need to make ordinary moments feel easier. For your customers, friends, people around you.

Serve them a plate of comfort.

Because when you are not there, it’s not you they’d miss but the way you made them feel.

Charm them!
