My favorite part is that this writer actually reached out to IRL, living authors to get their hot takes on why maps do or don't matter for fantasy books!

"...about 40 [Figma] engineers spent a dedicated week just converting colors to new tokens. Stack Overflow’s [dark mode] took about nine months... Our entire web team is 7 people. We couldn’t give dark mode 40 engineers for a week. We couldn’t even give it one full-time." wow

What a beautiful read as I was making my two year olds lunch. Was I ready to cry this early? No but it's probably good for me

"It was thought that people would be so overloaded by all this reading material that they might neglect their jobs or drift into a fantasyland. People were in danger of being overwhelmed by low-quality writing. Slop, we might call it today."

Can't wait to hear how Scott's been improving Pubs on Medium! "My focus over the past couple of months has been improving publications, mainly for editors. We believe that creating a more robust publications system will improve life for writers and readers."

I love how Alex thinks about immersion from different angles in video games. What makes something feel real, and how does that make it more worth it to play?

We (Medium) think SO much about how you (readers!) can trust the things (stories) we serve you. So interesting to read about this from the perspective of an etsy seller who's been on the other side of a platform prioritizing attention over quality.

When I lost my pregnancy, I was very comforted by the idea of microchimerism. That baby was never going to join me earthside, but they'll be a part of me forever anyway, now joined by the DNA of my living daughter. Pretty cool to read the science behind it.

huge hat tip to the Medium engineering team both for building this feature AND for giving such a detailed behind-the-scenes for it!

We always get asked "why do Medium community editors do so much, for free?" (This was before the editor partner program.) I saw a lot of commonalities with Wikipedia's unpaid, volunteer editors!

We've been pondering at Medium about how to distinguish between "many people consume this" good vs "one person/several people you sought out and really trust say this is worth reading" good. Thought this was a thoughtful breakdown of the issue and how netflix tackles it!

this is pitched as a resource for illustrators but I think it's a must read for writers, too. my fave tip: "lean into the feedback" which is what I've struggle with the most as a writer.
