A mist of isolation and a sense of losing my bearings crept into my heart. We stood on a steep incline, a few steps from an ancient wrought-iron gate, behind which a cobbled stone path was visible. The winding mountain path we had just driven up in a tiny, dilapidated red car looked deep and dark behind us, as dark green foliage arched, creating the illusion of a mysterious green tunnel.

“I left behind my wallet and the phone in the taxi,” my husband announced. That one statement instantly made us feel breathless and deeply anxious. As if on cue, the sky above us slowly took on a dark pallor, signaling a possible storm.

A Summer Day in the Himalayas

We were enjoying a holiday in India’s Mussoorie region this summer. Admiring the breathtaking mountain views, spending a charming afternoon tucking into delectable toffee pudding at the centuries-old Rokeby Manor, walking on mist-swept hill trails, and many other favorite activities made it a destination we went to as a family every time we visited India. On the last evening of our holiday, we met a fellow traveler whose unique suggestion led us to explore a place our family had never visited before the next morning.
