Russia is trying to take advantage of deteriorating autumn weather to push troops through Ukrainian defenses near Huliaipole, in southern Zaporizhzhia.

According to Ukraine’s 7th Air Assault Corps, Russian forces have been conducting local assaults involving infantry, motorcycles, and armored vehicles. Much of the activity involves small groups attempting to slip through Ukrainian positions rather than relying on large infantry formations.

Some groups consist of just one to five soldiers.

In an October 19 statement, the corps warned that Russian troops were attempting local breakthroughs as the weather worsened.

The fighting comes as Russia continues pressing westward in the Huliaipole direction. Ukrainian commanders say Moscow’s longer-term objective is to reach the outskirts of Zaporizhzhia city and threaten the regional capital.
