The Joy of Japanese Bakeries
From childhood favorites to unexpected discoveries
Croquette Bread: A Familiar Favorite
When the summer heat fades and the weather starts to cool down in Tokyo, I somehow find myself craving croquette bread.
Croquette bread is one of those foods I’ve eaten since I was a child, so I’ve never really stopped to think about how interesting it is.
A potato croquette inside bread might sound like an unusual combination when you think about it. But in Japan, croquette bread is a familiar bakery staple.
There are different ways to make it. Some have a whole croquette tucked into a bread roll, almost like a burger. The one I recently bought had a croquette cut in half and placed inside a soft bread roll, with shredded cabbage underneath and sauce on top.
I’ve probably eaten more croquette bread than I could ever count.
The flavor can be slightly different from one bakery to another, but the basic combination is hard to dislike. The soft bread, croquette, cabbage, and sauce just work together.
