Peter first noticed Julia at the new café in the east end one Friday evening in early November. She sat alone by the window, watching rain slide down the glass in crooked lines while the room buzzed around her.

A few nights later, they found themselves sharing a table after the café’s evening poetry reading. Chairs scraped across the tile floor as people got up to leave.

Neither had come for the poetry. Both were looking for the same thing: a place to disappear in the anonymity of strangers.

Conversation didn’t come easily.

They spent the first twenty minutes on harmless topics: the weather, work, how great the dark roast coffee was. Eventually, though, the walls began to lower.

Peter told her about the relationship that had quietly fallen apart after twelve years. One day he and his partner discussed a long-postponed vacation to Tahiti. A few months later they divided furniture, met lawyers, and learned how empty familiar rooms could feel.
