The Promise
Of Another Dawn ~ ~ ~
The sun made its sprightly appearance
A bit earlier this morning,
Or so it seems.
That turning back of clocks to standard time
Is doing me in.
The hours of daylight now feel compressed,
As though someone has taken a generous
Portion of summer and folded it neatly away.
No more wandering outside,
Tending to the yard until eight,
With the last remnants of sunlight
Keeping me company.
Unless, of course, I choose to don
A headlamp and carry on
Beneath the stars.
Darkness falls upon me like a familiar blanket,
Gently signaling an end
To the noises and commotion of the day.
The neighborhood children have put away
Their touch football,
Their bicycles no longer racing
Up and down the sidewalk.
