Has anyone played Plants vs. Zombies? If you have, this one’s for you.

Credits to Karen Schwartz for today’s prompt: Somewhere in your story, include the line, “I had hairy spiders coming out of my ears.”

I was halfway through the regular procedure when they rudely disturbed my decay.

Rude, I tell you.

“Next, please!” said the lady at the counter. She was remarkably chirpy despite the missing brains. Or perhaps because of it. I could see the hole in her skull where the maggots had gotten in.

At least I had the decency to act like I was half-rotten. I had hairy spiders coming out of my ears, twining around my feet. Whatever you still-alive people think, my creepy beauties are lovely. They eat right out of my hand, you know?

The happy lady was staring at me quite rudely by now, as if she wasn’t complicit in my awakening.

“Credentials, please, sir. I’ve asked for them twice,” she said.

“Oh, yeah,” I said. I untangled a fresh spider from my hair and handed it over.

“That seems to be in order. You know what to do?”

“Yeah, yeah, leave ’em out on the grass even though my beauties eat flesh. Let ’em be killed by those pea-shooter thingies. Die trying to eat lousy human brains. Anything else?”

“No, sir, enjoy your re-death! We’ll be right here for next time.”

I glared at her, and she didn’t even have the decency to look away. She smiled and waved and wouldn’t stop until I gave her a half-decent grimace in return.

I’m telling you, she’s one of the humans whose brains we eat in the games.

Thoughts? Also, check out the challenge for today… Vignette Gazette is a great place to warm up your mind.

People, check out this post by Meta Marvelia. I love unique perspectives on vignette prompts, and this one does it well.

Happy reading!
