I volunteered as a teacher’s aide to help eleven- and twelve-year-old children learn better. Every child learns differently. But my country’s educational system doesn’t accomodate the different ways in which children learn. You learn, or you don’t. You fail, or you succeed. Of course, parental involvement has helped to create geniuses. I had ingenious ways to stimulate my son’s brain and encourage learning, and it worked. So I volunteered to share it with other children. It worked.

Thirty-seven children, twenty girls and seventeen boys, had a Science exam in an hour. The teacher stepped out, and I decided to stimulate their brain. I paired the boys against the girls to quiz them on everything they were tested on. I flipped a coin after the boys chose heads and the girls chose tails. Heads won.

I laid down the rules. No books must be open. No one should scream out the answers. If the boys don’t know the answer, it goes to the girls. Vice versa. No cheating. The boys were winning until one of them was caught cheating. His team lost all their points, and the girls won.

The boys were beating the girls by more than five points. His team was furious with him.
