I remember my grandmother’s hands
cutting apples into a wooden bowl.
The musky scent of leaves in the yard
from trees still standing,

our fireplace breathing
into the crisp Fall night.

I left my New England home to chase the sun,
but I longed to return —
to taste the sweet, smoky flavors of Fall;

to walk beneath sugar maples
blazing red as paprika,
while beech trees loosen
copper and amber colors
into the wandering wind.

Farmers’ fields spill over
with yellow squash,
plump pumpkins,
jewel-like gourds filling wooden bins.

I write about loss, memory, and the strange humor that keeps us alive. My poems wander between grief and the grace of nature, often pausing to laugh at life.
